Britain: Rapidly increasing urbanization creates new diseases, scientists reveal

Rapidly increasing urbanization is causing new diseases worldwide.  This has been revealed in a research conducted by UK scientists.  Scientists say that this issue also needs to be taken care of to control the risk of future epidemics.  According to researchers and scientists at the University of Lincoln, UK, rapid urbanization affects the lives of millions of people and their relationship with nature.  The review paper published in the journal Urban Studies assesses the increasing trend of urbanization since 1980 and its role in the total number of diseases spreading every decade.

Researchers say that due to rapid urbanization, especially in Asia and Africa, people are settling in suburban areas outside cities, destabilizing the urban and rural environment.  The study further stated that in this way population outside cities can lead to new infectious or re-emerging diseases.

Scientists believe that people living in these areas are at highest risk of diseases spread from animals to humans.  Researchers said that such areas are lacking in health facilities and these areas are far from the eyes of government agencies.

The study gives examples of diseases like Ebola that started in suburban areas and later spread to established cities.  According to a Lincoln University expert, in addition to conflicts in development, labor market changes and urban expansion, there is an unprecedented migration from villages to cities in developing countries.
