Facebook wanted to buy Pegasus to spy on users, claims spyware company

Israel spyware company NSO Group claims that Facebook tried to buy Pegasus from them.  The NSO group has also presented documents in court to confirm this.

This Israel company came in the news about WhatsApp's famous espionage case.  Facebook-owned WhatsApp confirmed that 1400 users were spied using spyware named Pegasus on behalf of the Israeli cyber intelligence company NSO Group.

Facebook also sued the NSO group in October for allowing its clients to spy on a total of 1,400 WhatsApp users, including journalists, diplomats and members of civil society from various locations, including India.

The social media platform has alleged that it has spied 1,400 selected users globally, including 121 Indians.

According to Motherboard Vice's report, the head of the NSO Group says that two representatives from Facebook approached the company to buy Pegasus, our spyware program.  The company wanted to monitor some of its users with this tool.  The report has also told that Facebook was working to create its own VPN Onavo Protect tool and through this they used to analyze the traffic of the users.

The NSO group says that they sell this spyware only to government law enforcing agencies, so they did not sell Pegasus to Facebook.

At the same time, Facebook has blamed the allegations on itself.  According to the company, the NSO group is presenting the conversation incorrectly.  The company says that NSO is doing this to divert people's attention from the Pegasus hack.

 How Pegasus Works:-

The target is drawn on a link from the user.  This gives the Pegasus operator access to tamper with the security features of the phone.  Then Pegasus is installed in the phone without the user knowing.

Once Pegasus is installed in the phone, then according to the command of the operator, it can move any data.  Sending calls, messages, contacts is very easy.  If the operator wants, then the user's camera and mic can also be activated and keep an eye on all your activities.

WhatsApp claims that the NSO Group and Q Cyber Technologies only targeted smartphones through Pegasus through missed calls.

In all, links or missed calls were made to users who were spied on WhatsApp, giving the Israeli cyber intelligence company remote access to users' smartphones.
